KNX is a worldwide standard for automation of houses and buildings. The standard is based on 20 years of experience, and its forerunners on the market are EIB, EHS and BatiBUS. KNX is defined as international standard under the reference ISO/IEC 14543-3, European standard CENELEC EN 50090 and CEN EN 13321-1 and Chinese standard as GB/Z 20965.

The automation in houses and buildings allows:
- Light control
- Shutters and blinds control
- Security systems control
- Ventilation, heating and cooling systems control
- Surveillance systems control
- Installation remote control
- Various physical quantities measurement
- Audio/video control

The automation in houses and buildings provide comfort, security, energy saving, flexibility and adaptivity of future development.

The largest world companies that produce equipment for lighting, heating, cooling, ventilation, security systems, alarms are members of KNX association and produce equipment according to this standard.

By implementing this technology for automation in houses and buildings it is saved 30-40% energy, and it is reduced the emission of harmful gasses. The energy is used intelligently by increasing the energy efficiency of the buildings.

The implemented automation in the installation for lighting, heating and cooling allows controlling the building also via software that is executed on computer or smartphone. If the system is connected to Internet, the building can be also controlled remotely. These possibilities significantly increase the comfort by using this type of installations, compared to classic installations.

By implementation of automation in lighting, it can be enabled automatic switching on of the light, if there is presence of people and automatic switching off of the same, if no one is present. The light can be set to glitter from 0 to 100%. The constant light in the room is enabled by setting up the intensity of the light depending on the intensity of the daylight. The light can be controlled also through software running on computer or phone.

The shutters or the blinds can go up or down on a switch. The movement of the same can be automated depending on the time in the day (in the morning to go up and in the evening to go down) or depending on the wind speed (at high wind speed to go down, at low wind speed to go up). The shutters or the blinds can be controlled also by software running on computer or phone.

The heating and the cooling can also be automated in order to save energy and to increase the comfort. It can be set up the desired temperature and the system will reach the same. If a door or a window is opened for a longer time, the heating/cooling will automatically turn off in such room in order to save the energy.

The functions of the installation in the building, implemented by KNX standard, may be by changing the programs in the devices, without needing to be changed the installation itself.

Large number of sensors is available, which can measure different physical quantities in the same, in defined time interval and to send to a computer system, which can register them in adequate database. The obtained data can be analyzed, can be drawn charts or depending on certain values to undertake some actions. For example, if a sensor measures a value larger than some limit value, it can be turned on or off a device or it can be sent an SMS or an email.

There are sensors for temperature, lighting, pressure, air moisture, wind speed, CO2, oxygen, presence of water and many others. The ultimate switch actuators measure also the current power consumption. The information on the consumption can be sent to a computer system and stored in database, thus allowing further various data processing.
